I could go on and on about the things that are hard about being here and the things I don’t like on a day to day to basis, but instead, let’s focus on the things I love (in no particular order).
- Puppies sleeping in my lap.
- When people have to ask if I’m khmer or a barang (foreigner).
- The sound of rain on the tin roof.
- When my host mom takes an interest in me and asks me questions about America, my favorite was last week when we saw a clip on the news about Oprah’s last show. She had a ton of questions about her.
- That I can get tailor made shirts for $4.50.
- When the kids in my class ask me to go to the wat to eat “special food” (ie dog) or dessert with them.
- Watching my sister mimics me wash my face.
- When my laundry dries in 24 hours or less.
- Care packages. Especially the ones mom sends, I swear I ask for anything and it’s in the mail less than a week later, wonder woman.
- When people tell me how far my khmer has come.
Hope you’re having a great Memorial Day weekend!
Xo,
B
