This past weekend I finally traveled outside of my province! The first two months after swear in we are not supposed to leave our province so we can integrate with our new community, get to know our families, see how things work and all of that. I’ve made a lot of day trips and some quick overnights to the bigger provincial town but this weekend I got on a bus and ventured further!
The Angkor Wat Half Marathon was held this weekend in Siem Reap and a lot of the PCV’s were participating so I took it as an opportunity to cheer them on and hang out with people. Pulling into Siem Reap was like a whole new world. It seriously looked more like Las Vegas than Cambodia to my rural bumpkin eyes.
It was a great break, I ate lots of yummy western food, got some new music, danced the night away with PCV’s and saw more westerners (and heard more English!) than I had in a looong time. It was only one night away but still a great time, maybe not quite long enough to be considered vacation.
Last night coming back to site was a return to reality. My host parents left on Friday morning for a wedding in Thailand so my host Grandma (?) is staying at the house to help take care of my little sister. Let’s just say it has been quite an adventure and I can’t wait for my host parents to come back.
Between holidays, birthdays and trainings I have a lot more trips to look forward to over the next month or two and I’m so excited! I really do like being at site but I love traveling around, seeing other PCV’s and exploring new parts of Cambodia.
PS: They’re home!!

Let’s hear it for brownie batter. I smile every time I receive and read about a new adventure you experience. It may be something that happened on site or, like this one, a short trip to a larger community. You continue to become this beautiful flower that is unfolding. I am proud to be a part of your life. Love you lots little bit.
